Understanding Mozilla Firefox Alerts

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Summary

Some alerts generated during a Firefox update may show unusual command-line parameters such as argv0ignored or dummyparam.exe.

These alerts are expected and safe. They occur as part of Firefox’s normal update process and are not indicative of malicious activity.

Details

During a Firefox upgrade, the updater process launches several internal components and helper executables. As part of this process, you may see alerts referencing:

  • argv0ignored
  • dummyparam.exe

These parameters are used internally by Mozilla’s updater to handle self-restarts and command-line argument validation during patching.

This behavior is normal and occurs during the following executable flow:

/var/lib/jenkins/workspace/firefox-scan-build/toolkit/mozapps/update/updater/updater.cpp

The alert will typically include one of the above keywords in the command line and may look similar to the following example:

Recommendation

You can mark the DLLs and executables associated with these alerts as Trusted.
